SOME 7,300 policemen have been deployed for the ASEAN Leaders Summit to be held this Thursday and Friday in Cebu, the PNP said on Sunday.

PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. and other police officials sent off the security personnel in rites at the Mactan Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City on Saturday.

The PNP said the policemen will cover security, convoy protection, coastal and airspace monitoring, traffic management, emergency medical response and rapid incident handling.

The deployment covers site security, convoy protection, coastal and airspace monitoring, traffic management, emergency medical response, and rapid incident handling.

Government leaders from Southeast Asia, business executives from Europe and members of development institutions and civil society organizations will convene in Cebu on May 7 for the ASEAN-EU Sustainability Summit, ahead of the 48th ASEAN Leaders Summit on May 8 and 9.

The inaugural summit, organized by the EU-ASEAN Business Council and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, will provide a platform where government and business leaders from the 11-member ASEAN and EU business leaders can share best practices, strengthen capacity building and align efforts with international environmental agreements.

The PNP said Task Group Central Visayas, under the Committee on Security, Peace and Order, and Emergency Preparedness and Response, was also activated for the May 8-9 event.

The task group will integrate forces from the PNP, AFP, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, Department of Health, Office of Civil Defense and other agencies tasked to ensure peace and order during the ASEAN Summit 2026.

“This operation is the result of extensive planning and sustained coordination, drawing from established best practices in previous national and international events,” said Nartatez. “We are fully prepared to ensure a safe and secure ASEAN Summit.”

Nartatez conducted an aerial inspection of key areas “to assess operational readiness,” the PNP said.

The aerial inspection is also meant to “validate deployment plans, and ensure seamless coordination of security forces across critical sites, transport routes, and event venues.”

The PNP said the deployment levels are “calibrated based on operational requirements to maintain optimal security coverage at all times.”

ENERGY TRANSITION

The inaugural summit will also discuss climate change actions, energy transition, green finance, climate resilient agriculture, and sustainable growth and development amid regional challenges and the oil crisis brought by the Middle East conflict.

The summit will be attended by more than 200 officials and representatives

Among those expected to attend the summit are Finance chief Frederick Go, EU Ambassador to the Philippines Massimo Santoro and Indonesian Deputy Minister Leonardo Teguh Sambodo.

Meanwhile, the International Media Center for the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings will formally open on May 5 at the Mactan World Museum in Lapu-Lapu City for all accredited media covering the gathering.

The IMC will serve as the central hub for both local and international media, providing the facilities, technical support and operational services to ensure a comprehensive coverage of the summit’s official activities.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the opening of the IMC on May 5 reflects the Philippines’ readiness as host of the summit.

“It underscores the government’s commitment to supporting efficient and professional media operations throughout the summit period,” it said.
