MANILA, Philippines — A Department of Health (DOH) official insisted on Wednesday there is still no indication of a surge in COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila even as 25 of the 119 Delta variant cases in the country were detected in the region.

“Dito po sa 25 na ito, walo na po ang gumaling, isa po ang namatay at kasalukuyan po ngayon, 16 po yung active ang kanilang sakit,” DOH-National Capital Region’s epidemiology and surveillance unit chief Dr. Manuel Mapue II said in a televised briefing.

(Of these 25, eight have recovered, one have died and 16 remain active.)

On the 25 COVID-19 Delta cases in Metro Manila, Mapue said the location of the patients are the following:

Manila City – 10 cases
Pasig City – 7 cases
San Juan City – 2 cases
Las Piñas City – 1 case
Makati City – 1 case
Malabon – 1 case
Parañaque City – 1 case
Quezon City – 1 case
Taguig City – 1 case

Despite this, Mapue insisted there is still no evidence of a surge in the region since the increase in new cases being detected is “not stable.”

“Hindi po natin siya matatawag na surge pa sa ngayon, wala po tayong ebidensya para tawagin itong surge,” Mapue said.

(We cannot call it a surge for now, we don’t have evidence to call it a surge.)

“Karamihan po sa local government units naguumpisa po tumaas, although hindi po stable ang pagtaas, may araw po na bababa, kaunti lang yung nadadagdag sa kaso nila and meron ding mga araw na nabibigla yung pagdami ng kaso,” he added.

(Many of the local government units have started to see an increase, although it’s not stable, there are some days cases would decrease and only a few cases will be recorded. There are also days when more cases are suddenly detected.)

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III has advised local government units to intensify its measures to curb transmission after a 47-percent increase in daily COVID-19 cases was observed in Metro Manila.
