More and more companies recognize that respect for human rights - as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - is a fundamental and unavoidable part of being a responsible business. National and international companies address human rights as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy.

Observing human rights makes good business case. According to the International Business Leaders Forum, by acting on human rights, companies can safeguard reputation and brand image; gain competitive advantage; improve recruitment, retention and staff loyalty; foster greater productivity; secure and maintain a license to operate; reduce cost burdens; ensure active stakeholder engagement; and meet investor expectations.

The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, known as the Ruggie Framework can serve as a tool for risk management, providing an early-warning system to assess high-risk companies or operations, and as an approach to dealing with human rights dilemmas when they emerge. Implementing Ruggie Framework can help to prevent or mitigate the operational, legal, and reputational risks that companies may face due to human rights issues.

The Principles are applicable to local and multinational companies. Regardless of size, companies are encouraged to consider the Principles and how they can be mainstreamed into their corporate policies.

The aim of the Forum is to introduce to the Philippine business community the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and enhance understanding on how the Principles can be implemented in practical terms.
