Background

RA 9003 or the Ecological Solidwaste Management Act of 2000, despite the simplicity of its prescription – reduce, re-use, recycle at the local level has only been partially implemented.  The timetable for its full implementation is behind schedule.

According to the Asian Development Bank, garbage business in the Philippines is lucrative. Over P3.54 billion is spent annually on waste collection and disposal. Despite the amount of money spent, the sector does not function in a safe and sustainable way.   The garbage crisis is serious and poses even grave threats to public health and the environment if not resolved.

Generating energy and recovering raw materials from wastes, two domestically available resources can make viable contribution to solving the solidwaste problem as well as to security in energy and supply of raw materials.  Government both national and local, households, industrial and commercial establishments alike will benefit from this approach.

The forum will discuss on how the different waste streams can be managed in an economically and environmentally sound manner, considering the range of options from waste-to-energy to recycling.

Speakers from government and private sector have been invited to discuss the following topics:

General

  • Toward a Circular Economy: the Future of Solidwaste Management in the Philippines;
  • Philippine Solidwaste Situationer;
  • Integrated Solidwaste Management.
